With the wide variety of viruses, hackers and blended threats lurking on the Internet today, you need more than a simple anti-virus program to keep your PC and files secure. The extent of VirusScan's protection is very impressive considering the price - in protecting against spyware as well as viruses and with a bundled firewall thrown in for good measure, McAfee's VirusScan does what many complete Internet Security Suites do, but at the price of a stand-alone virus checker! With McAfee VirusScan Plus, powerful integrated technologies work together to combat and defeat even the most sophisticated multi-pronged attacks. McAfee's VirusScan Plus blocks and removes threats automatically, and identifies spyware and adware before they can run on your PC. Also, to keep things extra simple, the new McAfee SecurityCenter gives you at-a-glance control over all your McAfee applications. We found that VirusScan Plus's SecurityCentre (basically the software's control panel or user interface) was very intuitively designed and consequently very easy to use.

McAfee is one of the best known names in antivirus protection and it's new VirusScan Plus software boasts one of the best virus detection records around. The software received the VB100% award for 2005 (see award logo above from Virus Bulletin), the ICSA award for 2005 and passed both level 1 and 2 Checkmarks from West Coast Labs, which is generally very impressive.

So with all this praise, why is McAfee VirusScan not our No. 1 choice? There's no doubt that McAfee's VirusScan provides dependable virus protection around the clock, not to mention spyware protection and a firewall thrown in to-boot: all-in-all VirusScan sports a very impressive array of features (see list above), but there were one or two things we didn't like about McAfee. Firstly, their virus definition files are updated daily (which is pretty standard). But most virus checkers will automatically go online, search for new updates to the virus definitions, download these updates and install them in the blink of an eye without any intervention from the user. McAfee's VirusScan Plus prompts you to login however before the virus definion files are downloaded. This is only a minor daily inconvenience, but after a while it started to get on our nerves! Also, McAfee provide e-mail technical support, but they are often slow to respond to users' e-mails. They also provide telephone support, which many antivirus software manufacturers do not. However, at a cost of $39.00 per telephone support session, this doesn't come cheap and is a bit of a slap in the face - paying out $39 for telephone technical help is the last thing you want to do when you're computer's fallen flat on its back after a virus attack!

In summary, McAfee is one of the best known antivirus brands around, and for good reason. They provide excellent industrial-strength virus protection as verified by several independent organisations. Their software is easy to use and feature packed and will give you the confidence you need to surf the web, knowing it is always on, always updating and always protecting you. With added spyware protection and a firewall, McAfee's VirusScan plus in on a par with many Internet Security Suites, but at the affordable price of a stand-alone virus checker, which makes it great value for money. If you need urgent technical support however, you may have to re-mortgage your house to get it! Generally, McAfee is a very wise investment and would be the centrepiece of your computer's arsenal of protection, however, for our money, we would go with our No. 1 choice in this category - Panda's Titanium Antivirus Software.
