Editor's Verdict: Kapersky's Antivirus 6.0 product is a very effective deterrant against all forms of virusware, monitoring all virus entry points leaving you with a clean and safe machine. Kapersky's Antivirus 6.0 works in a very similar way to our No. 1 choice - Panda Titanium Antivirus, in that it tackles both known viruses, as well as unknown viruses. The known viruses are tackled by comparing them to a database of known viruses, which is updated daily on your machine by the automatic download and installation of the latest virus signature files. As-yet unknown viruses are tackled using an artificially-intelligence-driven heuristic engine that compares program behaviour with known virus behaviour to spot and block any suspicious activity. The heuristic engine thus delivers effective short-term protection until Kaspersky Labs identify any new viruses and produce and disseminate an anditote, which is automatically downloaded and installed onto your system via the virus definition file updates. Kaspersky's Antivirus 6.0 offers many advanced features, allowing more knowledgeable users the opportunity to fully configure the virus checker. However, most of the features have been pre-set so that the novice user need not interfere with these functions unless he/she wishes. This is great for the less-knowledgeable user who wishes to just install the Antivirus 6.0 with it's most common features, while still allowing the advanced user the opportunity to fully configure the virus checker. The Antivirus 6.0 has been designed with laptops in mind, featuring an economy mode that conserves battery life, which will be a great plus to those of you with laptops who like to take your work with you. All internet traffic is scanned in real-time, notifying you of any potential threats before any infected file or porogram is saved to your hard disk. E-mail scanning is also provided (on incoming mail servers using POP3, IMAP and NNTP and SMTP for outgoing mail). The e-mail scanning system works with any mail program but has been specifically tailored for use with Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express, where plug-ins are provided to improve the interface with the Antivirus software. The entire hard disk can be scanned or you can elect to perform a smart scan which concentrates solely on critical aspects of the operating system in order reduce scanning time. More advanced users may wish to scan certain folders or files, and this is also allowed with Kaspersky's Antivirus 6.0. Files are also scanned upon opening and programs are scanned upon execution. iSwift and iChecker technology also make it possible to limit scanning to new and modified files, or to limit scanning to potentially dangerous objects only. Antivirus scanning can be suspended during times of increased user activity to ensure that your computer's resources are free for your use. Kaspersky's Antivirus 6.0 also monitors your computer's memory for any suspicious applications or processes that are launched (as well as hidden processes, or rootkits in main memory). The system's registry is also protected from any unauthorised changes. Any attempts to change the registry or create new registry keys will be blocked and the user informed immediately. Should a virus be detected by Kaspersky Antivirus 6.0 then it will be cleaned or removed automatically by the system and the user will be notified. Kaspersky also comes with a System Restore function, allowing you to roll back your system to a previous configuration. This is especially useful and does what many registry cleaners would do for an additional cost (but with Kaspersky's Antivirus 6.0 this functionality comes free). If your computer stops functioning properly then very often rolling back the system to a last known good configuration will fix the problem. Kaspersky's Antivirus 6.0 also protects from viruses in Visual Basic macros, such as those used in Microdoft Office documents. Kaspersky comes with three types of scan levels:
Kapersky also comes with excellecnt technical support featuring e-mail support, support from an on-line forum (where you can often find the answers you're looking for or ask one of the forum members (normally other users like yourself) a question), telephone support, and an extensive knowledgebase of answers. In summary we found Kaspersky Antivirus 6.0 to be excellent at detecting and removing viruses. It has the Virus Bulletin 100% award, as well as Computer Shopper's Best Buy award and it's plain to see why. The software allows advanced users to fully configure the system but is also ideal for novice users with many pre-set functions and a quick scan button. The virus definition updates are delivered hourly, which is far more often than many other products we reviewed, affording you excellent protection from the latest threats. The scanning speed is fast and the virus definition updates have been compressed, meaning that your system updates with the latest definition files almost instantaneously. The installation can be a little tricky for novice users but if you follow all the instructions then you should get through it ok. It's also very competitively priced, giving Kaspersky's Antivirus 6.0 the No1Reviews thumbs-up!
