CA Antivirus from Computer Associates is an affordable yet highly effective virus checker. It's ease of installation and ease of use makes it ideal for the home or the workplace. Scanning is fast and effective, with independent tests performed by Virus Bulletin reporting 100% success rate in virus detection - see above for details of the test. CA Antivirus uses an Explorer-like tree like structure so you can choose which files or folders you wish to scan, or which files or folders to exclude from your scan. Alternatively, simply perform a full system scan. Infected files can be easily healed or deleted, although unfortunately the option to quarantine the infected file seems to be strangely absent (this option is available on most other Antivirus software). Still, CA Antivirus found no false positives in Virus Bulletin's tests, which practically does away with the need for quarantining infected files, since all the infected files it detects are indeed viruses and should be removed, which the software will do automatically for you.

A new snooze function allows you to suspend real-time system scanning for up to 99 minutes, allowing you to suspend the virus checker without completely disabling it - useful for when you want to install new software. New software installations frequently ask you to disable any virus checkers you have before installing them. With the CA Antivirus, you can simply suspend real-time scanning instead. Click the Wake-Now icon in your system tray to restart virus scanning, otherwise scanning will re-start automatically after 99 minutes (this time-out can be set from 1 to 99 minutes).

Full technical support is available via e-mail should you need it. Computer Asociates also have an extensive help system available in their on-line knowledge database - just type in your question and you should find an answer to most of your problems here. Telephone support is also available, but this will cost you a hefty $49.95, so unless it's a dire emergency, you may want to stick with e-mail support!

We found the CA Antivirus a pleasure to use with a very intuitive and familiar user-interface. Scanning speeds were fast and virus detection and removal is completely reliable. This is a very cheap and yet effective alternative to the more expensive virus checkers and that makes it great value for money.
